What is the basic China-to-Nepal import process?

Define the product and specifications, verify the supplier, confirm the commercial terms, prepare documents and freight, identify the correct HS classification, estimate taxes and charges, and complete clearance through the relevant licensed parties and Nepal Customs.

1. Define the product before requesting prices

Give suppliers a consistent specification: material, dimensions, performance, branding, packaging, quantity, compliance needs and delivery destination. Quotes cannot be compared reliably when suppliers are pricing different specifications.

2. Verify the supplier and the product

Check the Chinese business registration, confirm that the receiving bank account matches the contracted entity where appropriate, request samples and document agreed specifications. For higher-risk or customized orders, production follow-up and inspection should be planned before the balance payment.

3. Confirm the commercial terms

Record the unit price, quantity, Incoterm, packing method, lead time, payment schedule, warranty position and responsibility for China-side export work. FOB, EXW and CIF quotations allocate costs and responsibilities differently.

4. Prepare import and shipping documents

Documents commonly include a commercial invoice, packing list and transport document. Product-specific permits, certificates or approvals may also be required. Exact requirements depend on the goods, origin, intended use and current regulation.

5. Classify the goods and estimate the landed cost

The HS code influences duty, excise, VAT treatment and document requirements. Product names alone are often insufficient; material, function and specification can change classification. Use our Nepal import tools for verified records currently available, then confirm uncertain classifications before declaration.

6. Arrange freight and customs-clearance handover

Choose the mode based on volume, weight, urgency, product restrictions and total cost. Give the clearing party a complete document set early. Lumbini can coordinate sourcing information, shipment preparation and the Nepal-side handover; official declarations and decisions remain with the relevant licensed providers and authorities.

What should you calculate before ordering?

  • Product cost and China-side charges
  • International freight and insurance
  • Customs assessable value
  • Customs duty, excise and VAT where applicable
  • Port, terminal, clearance and local delivery charges
  • Cost per saleable unit, including a reasonable contingency
Methodology and sources

This guide separates a commercial workflow based on Lumbini's sourcing experience from official tax and customs decisions. Tariff figures shown in our tools are limited to records that have been verified against the cited Nepal Customs tariff source. No customs valuation is guessed.
